Ultrasound
CAMO’s Ultrasound Program started in 2001, continues to provide services in response to an urgent need identified by Honduran healthcare leadership. Pregnant women experiencing complications are n turned away from the public hospitals without the diagnostic information needed to determine the seriousness of their condition—putting both mothers and babies at risk.
Today, CAMO has employees and multiple Honduran counterparts dedicated to strengthening ultrasound services. CAMO has also placed ultrasound equipment in maternal-care facilities at the Public Health Center in Santa Rosa de Copán, Corquín, and Gracias, Lempira, and other small clinics throughout Honduras, expanding access to timely diagnostic care.
IMPACT
Cervical Cancer Prevention & Treatment
CAMO’s cervical cancer program began in the early 2000s after Dr. Lourdes Robles identified a critical gap in care. Women with abnormal cervical findings were being referred for treatment, only to face repeated delays or denial of services. CAMO responded by bringing diagnostic equipment, pathology support, cryotherapy, and treatment directly into the public health system.
The need was immediate. Within the program’s first month, 32 women requiring emergency surgery were identified, and CAMO worked with counterpart surgeons to ensure they received treatment within four weeks.
Today, CAMO equips and maintains four clinics capable of diagnosing and treating precancerous cervical lesions while continuing screening, follow-up, and treatment. Dr. Jorge Romero has worked for more than 20 years alongside Honduran OB/GYN physicians, strengthening their ability to diagnose cervical disease, perform procedures, and train others.
IMPACT
CAMO has transformed cervical cancer care from delayed referral into earlier detection, local treatment, and lasting professional capacity—giving women a better chance to receive care before a preventable condition becomes life-threatening
Gynecology
The gynecology service for women with limited resources aims to provide access to reproductive health, prevent diseases, and comprehensively treat gynecological conditions. Services include: Gynecological consultations, Preventive exams such as Pap smears and ultrasounds, and Family planning.
IMPACT
By bringing preventive screenings, reproductive health services, and treatment within reach, CAMO helps women detect problems earlier, protect their health, and receive care before conditions become more serious.
Mammography
CAMO’s Mammography Program began in the late 1990s to address a major gap in breast health services in western Honduras. By placing one of the region’s first mammography machines at the Public Health Center in Santa Rosa de Copán, CAMO helped create access to screening, diagnosis, and coordinated treatment in one location.
The program brings together physicians, radiologists, pathologists, oncologists, surgeons, and trained technologists to provide timely care. Each October and November, CAMO expands outreach to women from rural communities, many of whom have never had access to breast cancer screening. Every year, women are diagnosed who had no idea they were living with breast cancer.
The first cancer identified through the program was, unexpectedly, in a male patient—demonstrating the broad importance of early detection.
IMPACT
Early diagnosis gives patients a greater chance for treatment, survival, and more years with their families—helping prevent the devastating loss of mothers, caregivers, and loved ones to undetected breast cancer
