Teachers are frequently the first to realize that a child is not performing well in class because they are hungry. As part of CAMO’s school literacy outreach, children identified by their teachers as at risk are referred for nutritional evaluation by Bianca, the CAMO nutritionist, and started on a program of nutritional recuperation. It is so gratifying to see increases in weight and height on follow-up visits, as well as brighter eyes and students ready to learn.
